Who could believe that a scene from the Teletubbies, mythical cartoon of the end of the 90s, could have been scary? It turns out that one of the episodes that features the four colorful characters had to be banned worldwide, deemed too terrifying.
The episode in question is that of the lion and the bear. The two figures are cut out of cardboard and the bear comes first, followed by the lion, which chases it. In the original scene, the Teletubbies are terrified by the arrival of the bear, who repeats in a somewhat frightening voice “I am the bear, I am the bear and I am coming”. Then the lion, also scary, arrived. “I’m the scary lion, with big scary teeth,” he said.
The scene continues with a chase through the green hills, as La-laa urges her comrades to hide. This scene, considered too traumatic by the parents, had to be deleted. A 1997 review even called the scene “the greatest horror movie of all time.”
Four years later, the BBC changed the scene to make it more suitable for children, we read in the columns of The Sun. The Teletubbies then seem delighted with the bear’s arrival and the latter’s voice has been changed to sound less scary. Threatening music has also been replaced.
