Spiderman: An anti-LGBT PC mod created a big controversy and was removed from the game!

The modders of Spider-Man Remastered have been very active since the PC game released last week, creating mods to turn pigeons into rats and all sorts of other fun mods. However, there are not only benevolent modders in the community.

The mod removed from the platforms

The mod, named “Non-Newtonian New York” in reference to Isaac Newton’s work on the prism (and therefore the colors of the pride flag) – a name that is intended to be intelligent but struggles to hide the stupidity of its author – is appeared on Nexus Mods a few days ago.

The Nexus Mods team quickly removed this mod and banned its creator, only to post a blog post outlining their views on this type of issue to the community:

Recently, our site was the scene of a stupid drama caused by the download of a mod for Spider-Man Remastered. The mod replaced the few pride flags present in the game with the texture of the American flag, already very common in the game. The mod was removed from Nexus Mods and its author was banned.

As for banning, a topic that many people want to focus on, the mod was uploaded by a “sock puppet” account (i.e. a newly created account by someone who already has an account on the site) and uploaded as “Mike Hawk”. […]

If he [l’utilisateur] hadn’t been loose and used his main account instead, we would have just deleted the mod and told him we didn’t want to host him, only banning him if he uploaded it again after being properly warned. The creation of the “disposable account” helped remove all doubts and made the decision very easy for us. The disposable account and the user’s main account were both banned.

When it comes to the replacement of pride flags in this game, or any other game, our policy is: we are for inclusion, we are for diversity. If we believe someone is uploading a mod to our site with the intention of deliberately being against inclusivity and/or diversity, we will take action against them. […]

[…] As a private company, we have the right to choose what content we want or don’t want to host on our platform. Respect this right in the same way that you want your rights to be respected.

[…] We don’t want to discuss it any further. We have now explained our position and will not provide you with a platform to twist our position to fuel an irrational and paranoid narrative. You can do it elsewhere, where we won’t care enough about you to read it.

If this policy bothers you, if we have violated a moral code of conduct as a business that you cannot accept, then delete your account and move on, as we will..”

A response that we can only applaud. You can view the full Nexus Mods post, in English, at their website.

The mod uploaded to other platforms

The mod unfortunately ended up on other modding platforms, like ModDBfor example, which also removed the hateful content and banned the user with a tweet similar to the Nexus Mods post.

Since then, and to end on a positive note, a wave of inclusive mods have appeared on Nexus Mods in response to the situation, reports eurogamer.

Colorful New York replaces all American flags with the Pride flag, while Progressive Flags adds flags for different minorities and groups, like trans and Black Lives Matter flags.

Available for only a few short days on PC, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered already benefits from several quite fun mods! Tired of being the very famous Spidey? Become… Stan Lee or even Kingpin or simply Miles Morales!
