Twenty-five years later, Mel C felt ready to speak out about what happened one night in 1997 when she was sexually assaulted.
It was the day before the Spice Girls’ first concert. “I did everything to ‘forget’ this trauma, I wanted to concentrate on my work. I didn’t want to make a fuss, but also, I didn’t have time to deal with it.“, she confided in the podcast “How To Fail with Elizabeth Day”.
“We were in Istanbul, we did two shows there. At the time, we had never done a full gig before, so obviously we had rehearsed for weeks in advance.“.
Without giving many details, the artist explained that she had been the victim of sexual assault in her hotel while she was having a massage. “I felt violated. I felt very vulnerable. I felt embarrassed and wasn’t quite sure what was going on.“
But at 48, Mel C decided to talk about it, she who intends to mention this story in the book she is writing. “I kind of woke up, thought about it, and was like, ‘Oh my God, I hadn’t even thought of putting that in the book. Then, of course, I had to wonder if I wanted to reveal it. I realized that it was really important for me to talk about it and finally be able to deal with it.“
