IThree and a half years ago, residents of the Brussels municipality of Ganshoren received an astonishing offer: to benefit from the surplus production of the fifty or so solar panels installed on the roof of the neighboring school. Only one condition, a bit technical: to be connected to the same electrical cabin as the establishment. Dozens of months and meetings later – since August 2020 precisely – twelve residents operate their washing machine and their light bulbs thanks to the electricity from the famous panels. “I get two bills a month. One from my ordinary supplier and one from the energy community that counted the electricity I consumed from the school panels,” explains Pierre Andrianne, a 70-year-old pensioner, enthusiastically. The project in which he participates – undoubtedly one of the most successful in the kingdom – was able to see the light of day thanks to an exemption because at the time of its start, the law did not authorize anyone to be a supplier of energy. Era now over.
