Let’s not beat around the bush, there are several rumors about the famous SSD Samsung 990PRO. With the upcoming release of AMD AM5 motherboards and Ryzen 7000s, we were expecting a PCIe Gen5 SSD, it had even been “confirmed”. Well actually no, Samsung sticks to PCIe 4.0. This does not mean that there will not be Samsung XXX PRO SSDs in PCIe Gen5, but it is not for now.
7450 MB/s in reading and 6900 MB/s in writing for the Samsung 990 PRO SSD, yes we remain in PCIe 4.0
Concretely, this reference will be in three capacities: 1, 2 and 4 TB with respectively 1, 2 and 4 GB of DRAM. All will be available with or without a heat sink. These SSDs are based on a home controller and some 3-bit Samsung V-NAND TLC memory. This new controller allowsimprove energy efficiency by up to 50% compared to the 980 PRO. Additionally, the 990 PRO uses a nickel coating on the controller and a “heat sink label” for reliable thermal management. Technology Dynamic Thermal Guard from Samsung ensures that the temperature of the SSD remains within the optimal range. The 990 PRO version with heat sink logically offers better temperature management while the RGB lights add a little something extra for RGB lovers.
Debits go up to 7450 MB/s read and 6900 MB/s write with some IOPS at 1,400,000 read and 1,550,000 write. With up to 55% random performance improvement over the Samsung 980 PRO SSD, the 990 PRO is particularly well suited for intensive gaming as well as creative and productivity tasks.
These SSDs always come with the Samsung Magician software.
“With continued innovations in gaming, 4K and 8K technologies, and AI-based applications, consumer demand for high-performance storage is growing exponentially.”
