His disastrous fate had taken shape with his reluctance when, on February 14, 1989, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, “Supreme Guide of the Islamic Revolution” issued a fatwa (Islamic edict) from Tehran condemning the writer to death for blasphemy. and apostasy for his novel The Satanic Verses. Salman Rushdie was probably the first to be surprised, because he showed no desire to attack Islam head-on.
