PlayStation is about to make a big buyout – Geeko

Stephane D’Astous, the founder of the Eidos Montreal studio, has just added a little fuel to the fire, by confirming Sony’s interest in acquiring the Square-Enix studios.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, the founder of the Eidos Montreal studio confirmed Sony’s interest in Square-Enix. “There have been rumors, obviously, that Sony would like to buy Square-Enix. I heard rumors that Sony was very interested in Square-Enix’s Japanese studios, but not its Western studios. I think that’s why Square-Enix held a garage sale” explains the man.

Stephane D’Astous thus confirms a rumor that has been circulating for a while. Square-Enix would have got rid of its three Western studios by reselling them to the publisher Embracer at a bargain price to accelerate an acquisition of its Japanese studios. Because de facto, Square-Enix would not be doing very well. Several projects would have called into question the strategy of the group and would have pushed it to evaluate an acquisition. In this case, it would be Square’s Japanese licenses that would interest Sony. Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest or even Valkyrie Profile would weigh very heavily on the Japanese market, and the recent exclusives signed with Nintendo would have impacted console sales on the archipelago. Given the popularity of these licenses, Sony would potentially be willing to shell out a lot of money to get their hands on them. Because de facto, some licenses have passed through his fingers. And the publisher certainly has very little of its longtime partner getting close to any of its rivals…

Recent statements from Sony – which explained that it was not done with acquisitions after the takeover of Bungie -, and the few excluded signed with Square-Enix (Final Fantasy VII Remake, the new Valkyrie Profile or even Forspoken) leave under- to hear that such a proposal is clearly possible. It remains to be seen if all this will materialize this year…
