news culture Netflix: 6 canceled series like Resident Evil

No less than 81 series have been canceled by Netflix in recent years. A large number of projects have thus bowed out, leaving spectators eager to discover what’s next. In August 2022, the ax fell for Resident Evil, and it’s not an isolated case. Here are 6 series canceled by Netflix after one or more seasons.

Summary

  • Altered Carbon
  • cowboy bebop
  • Dark Crystal: Time of Resistance
  • daybreak
  • Jupiter’s Legacy
  • Sense8

Altered Carbon

We begin this overview of series canceled by Netflix with the adaptation of a science fiction novel, and more precisely cyberpunk, written by Richard K. Morgan and published in 2002. Altered Carbon takes place in the 24th century, a time when technology allows humans to transfer their minds from one body to another. This raises the question of immortality and its impact on the spirit. It is in this context that Takeshi Kovacs, a former rebel, is “awakened” in order to investigate the murder of the richest man in the world, Laurens Bancroft. While the main role was held by Joel Kinnaman in the first season, Anthony Mackie takes over in the second. Altered Carbon was finally canceled in August 2020 without Netflix commenting on this decision. Note that there is also an animated film – Altered Carbon: Resleeved – which tells another adventure by Takeshi Kovacs.

cowboy bebop

Place now in a textbook case with the series that will follow. From its announcement, the fans tremble, and for good reason the magnitude of the task makes you dizzy. Netflix is embarking on the live-action adaptation of a cult work of Japanese animation, namely anime cowboy bebop directed by Shin’ichirō Watanabe (Samurai Champloo, Terror in Resonance). Released in November 2021, the Live Action series starring John Cho, Mustafa Shakir and Daniella Pineda is canceled from December 2021 after a single and unique season. It must be said that the Netflix series received poor reviews from fans and never managed to convince. Cowboy Bebop follows the adventures of Spike Spiegel and his team of bounty hunters aboard their ship Bebop in the near future where Earth has become uninhabitable following an accident involving the moon.

Dark Crystal: Time of Resistance

We are continuing our journey through the graveyard of Netflix series with an atypical project that delighted SVOD service subscribers when it was released in August 2019. Dark Crystal: Time of Resistance is an American animated series directed by Louis Leterrier (Danny the Dog, The Incredible Hulk, Insaisissables) and produced with the help of models and puppets. The series is intended as the prologue to the animated film by Jim Henson and Frank Oz released in the early 80s. In a fantasy world, three Gelflings – Rian, Brea and Deet – try to launch a movement of revolt against the evil Skekses and to save the world of Thra following a terrible discovery. Unfortunately, Dark Crystal: Time of Resistance is canceled in September 2020 after one season. If you want to continue exploring this universe, the comic book “The Power of the Dark Crystal” is ideal. It follows the events told in the Netflix series and the 1982 film.

daybreak

After science fiction, head for the zombie apocalypse with the adaptation of a comic book scripted and illustrated by Brian Ralph. daybreak is an American series created by Brad Peyton and Aron Eli Coleite taking as its setting the city of Glendale located in the State of California. This once quiet town becomes a real hell when a nuclear and biological bombardment transforms the adults into monsters hungry for human flesh. We meet Josh, a 17-year-old high school student looking for his girlfriend and trying to survive against the other clans that run the city. Netflix ends the series in December 2019 after a single season to the dismay of its co-creator Aron Coleite:

No one is more heartbroken than we are that we can’t continue this ride with you. But we are so grateful that we were able to go this far. – Aron Coleite (co-creator – Daybreak)

Jupiter’s Legacy

What was to become the “Mark Millar Universe” on Netflix never saw the light of day. The collaboration between the British author (Swamp Thing, Wanted, The Secret Service) and Netflix begins in May 2021 with the release of the Live Action series to great fanfare Jupiter’s Legacy adapted from the comic book of the same name. A month later, Netflix thanks the cast and crew, and cancels the development of a possible season 2. However, fans of this slightly whimsical superheroic universe can turn to the anime Supercrooks, a spin-off centered about villains and set in the same universe as the main series. In an alternate present, a team of superheroes led by The Utopian protects the world as dissension threatens to shatter the harmony between these exceptional beings.

Sense8

The following program is a special case in the Netflix ecosystem. Sense8 is an American science fiction series created by the Wachowskis and Joseph Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5). Despite the rave reviews from fans and critics who praise the vision of the directors of the Matrix trilogy, but also of Speed Racer and Jupiter: The Destiny of the Universe, the adventure ends definitively on June 8, 2018 after the broadcast of a final and final episode. However, the series was canceled in June 2017, but under popular pressure, the SVOD service allows Lana Wachowski to conclude the saga as it should with “Amor Vincit Omnia”. Netflix justified its decision on economic grounds (see below). The story of Sense8, as its name suggests, revolves around eight characters scattered around the world and who have the particularity of being able to connect to each other emotionally, intellectually and sensorially.

They did a great series. The audience was very passionate, but not large enough to support the economy of such a big project, even on our platform. – Ted Sarandos (Chief Content Officer – Netflix)
