Nearly one in two Belgians in a digital galley situation: “There is an emergency”

The digitization of society has not led to a general improvement in digital skills. On the contrary, inequalities have widened further. A situation deemed “alarming” by the King Baudouin Foundation, which calls for urgent alternative solutions.

E-learning, e-shopping, e-health, e-working… The covid crisis, and its confinement, have precipitated the shift in our lives to the digital world. However, the digitization of society has not been done on an equal footing for all. In 2021, almost one in two Belgians was in a situation of digital vulnerability (46% of 16-74 year olds, i.e. 3.5 million people). They were “only” one in three in 2019. To complicate the matter, this “social handicap” mainly affects socio-economically and culturally disadvantaged people. A hard time.
