The Energy Mediation Service received, in the first six months of 2022, an impressive number of complaints about “mystery switches”, in which customers change electricity supplier without having asked for it, report Het Laatste Nieuws and De Morgen on Thursday.

“Affected customers suddenly receive a message from their supplier that their contract has been terminated. Without them asking or knowing who their new supplier is”explains mediator Eric Houtman.

Nearly 90 complaints were received per month during the first half of the year, while 185 had been registered in the whole of 2021. According to Mr. Houtman, the explanation lies in the new IT system of the network operator Fluvius and the suppliers. of energy, which has a loophole in not allowing it to notice if a mistake is made with the EAN code – a series of 18 digits to identify each electricity or natural gas connection. “My advice to victims is to ask the ‘old’ supplier who the new one is and make it clear to them that a mistake has been made,” explains Mr. Houtman. “Above all, do not pay any bills from this ‘new’ supplier. You have not signed a contract with them, so you are not obliged to pay. You will also have to convince the ‘old’ supplier to reopen your contract. In principle, he is obliged to do so.”
