Last June, the highly publicized lawsuit, which lasted more than a month, between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard ended with Johnny Depp being awarded around $10 million by a Virginia judge. The jury had also ruled in favor of the actor on numerous counts of the long list of wrongdoings the couple had accused each other of, ranging from abuse, whether physical, verbal or emotional, to diffamation.

This is why the actress would be in the process of constituting a new team of lawyers in order to appeal the verdict of the trial against her former companion. As reported deadline, Heard reportedly ‘replaced most of his lawyers’ ahead of upcoming legal battle with Depp.

Indeed, the actress was reportedly unhappy with the way her legal team behaved, Depp’s lawyers successfully emphasizing Heard’s personal credibility. A tactic that certainly had its effect, since subsequently Heard was the subject of much mockery on social networks during the trial.

Court filings now appear to show that Heard’s lead attorney, Elaine Bredehoft, is out, thus giving way to two Philadelphia lawyers, David L. Axelrod and Jay Ward Brown, who will now represent the actress. Heard’s new team said in a recent press release:

We are pleased to be able to represent Ms. Heard in this appeal, as this is a case that has significant First Amendment implications for all Americans.

We are confident that the Court of Appeal will correctly apply the law without deference to popularity, overturn the judgment against Ms. Heard and reaffirm fundamental principles of free speech.

Heard’s argument for his appeal therefore appears to be based on the First Amendment of the United States Constitution., including prohibiting Congress from passing laws restricting freedom of religion and expression. Using this approach, Heard likely intends to argue that the article published in 2018 in the washington post was a matter of free speech, not a calculated act of defamation aimed at damaging Depp’s career.

And while Depp and Heard have gone back and forth legally over who was the abusive spouse in the relationship, both have suffered the respective consequences of the discussion in the public sphere. And apparently the next round of this legal-media battle is on its way..
