iPhone: several million devices rendered obsolete – Belgium iPhone

iOS 16, the latest version of Apple’s operating system, is not supported on multiple devices.

Available for download for a few weeks, iOS 16 brings a lot of new software to older generation iPhone models. However, not everyone is entitled to it.

The update is therefore only compatible with iPhone models from 2017 and later. Consider the following models.

2017: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X
2018: iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
2019: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
2020: iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
2021: iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
2022: iPhone SE (3rd generation), iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

If your device does not appear on this list, it is not possible to install iOS 16 on it.

Three models in the hot seat

The iPhone 6s, 7 and 7 Pro are among the models that will not benefit from the new updates. Their owners are therefore urged to obtain one of the new models as soon as possible. Apple wants to be reassuring, the giant will continue to offer security updates for these three models. However, some apps will become incompatible with these models over the months. Mobile applications are no longer updated for older versions of the OS.

Several totally obsolete models

Owners of older terminals are completely excluded even from security updates. Concretely, their devices are now considered totally obsolete. More news, more updated apps and more security patches.

The affected devices are:

  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 5c
  • Iphone 6
  • iPhone 6Plus

Earlier models were also already excluded from future security updates/patches.
