Published this Thursday, July 21, the book looks back in particular on the beginning of the relationship between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in 2016. According to the author, the actress would have put pressure on the Duke of Sussex to compare publicly his situation with that of his late mother, Princess Diana.
For fear of losing her, he had formalized their relationship by accusing the media of harassment of Meghan as well as sexist and racist descriptions. He had directly appealed to Jason Knauf, his press officer, to express his anger: “She demanded that the statement reflect the parallel between her potential destiny and that of Diana”, explains Tom Bower. A dangerous comparison the press secretary reportedly warned: “Knauf suggested that dramatizing Meghan’s distress would backfire, but Harry was adamant. If Meghan’s wish to be equated with Diana was not satisfied, he would probably lose her.”
Finally, the press release will not directly mention Lady Di by name but will be content to allude to the tragedies that struck her: “My partner, Meghan Markle, is the target of a wave of harassment. I am worried about her security and I am deeply disappointed not to be able to protect her. It is not a game, it is her life which is at stake”, had thus expressed prince Harry at the time.
