Very few of us need to remember that the Prince and Princess of Wales’ famous love affair began at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
The couple met during their freshman year when they were both living in the same dorm. They then lived together in their second year in a rented house with three other pals.
As you can imagine, when Prince William enrolled in college, he soon found himself the center of attention among the fairer sex. A situation that made him very nervous then.
Mutual friend Laura Warshauer told royal expert Katie Nicholl in her book The Future Queen about young student Kate Middleton’s tactic to keep overly ambitious young women from approaching (her) William .
It is well known that Kate and William were very close friends before they fell in love. Like any good friend, Kate had found a trick to help her get out of sticky social situations.
And Laura to remember: “Once at a party, Will was really being hit on by a girl and it became quite uncomfortable because he couldn’t get rid of it.”
“He was very polite, but that girl just didn’t understand. All of a sudden Kate came up behind him and hugged him. He said: “Oh, sorry, but I have a girlfriend,” and he and Kate walked off laughing.”
William was very grateful for Kate’s helping hand and, according to Laura, said “Thank you very much”.
According to this former fellow audience member, the bond between William and Kate was already very special: “Kate was the only girl in the room who could have done that. And that was just a month after we started college.”
