The Vengeful Dance of the Dragons

If episodes 9 and 10 introduced us to an Alicent and Rhaenyra eager to keep the peace and calm the warrior spirits of the men around them, things should change in season 2. Certainly, Rhaenyra has said it, she will not strike the first blow. However, the latter was worn at the very end of the season with the death of Lucerys. And it is enough to see the changing gaze of the Queen to understand that she will not let this act go unpunished. A mother’s revenge, this is what will allow the Dance of the Dragons to really begin, and this in blood and fire.

Aemond was calling for just payment for the loss of his eye and one suspects Rhaenyra will do the same for the death of her son. We therefore expect to see the second season present us with a quest for revenge on the Black side. The latter could just as easily attack Aemond directly (given the parallels drawn between the two characters, an Aemond/Daemon duel perhaps) or another member of Aegon’s family, who would be easier to reach .

But if the Dance of the Dragons carries its share of revenge, it is before a war of succession. And who says war, says battle. So we can expect more fights in Season 2, with huge battlefields and summit duels. According to Daemon, the fight should take us to the side of Harrenhal. Its strategic position makes it a good outpost to face the Greens, not to mention the symbolic significance of this place. Wrest the gigantic fortress from the hands of Larrys Fort, the very one who caused the death of Jacaerys’ real father, Lucerys and Joffrey, would be a most appreciable revenge. But to embark on the battle, it is still necessary to have the necessary forces.

In episode 10, Daemon has already started to expand those of his camp by going in search of the Wild Dragons. Formerly ridden by Dragon Lords, these independent creatures retreated, mostly to Dragon Mountain, upon the death of their master. This is particularly the case of Smoke-of-the-Seas, that Laenor Velaryon left behind during his escape, but also of Vermithor, former dragon of King Jaehaerys. It is the latter that we see in episode 10 of House of the Dragon. Easy to deduce, since apart from Vhagar, no dragon in Westeros is as old and tall as him.

Daemon being still alive, we suspect that this new dragon has been more or less tamed. It now remains to find him a dragon rider, but also to try to gain the favors of the other Wild Dragons such as Smoke-of-the-Seas certainly, but also the Cannibal, Voleur-de-Moutons or Gris Spectre. But the little game that went wrong between Lucerys and Aemond showed us that it was not wise to rely solely on dragons recently tamed and/or not used to fighting. This is why the question of alliances will probably remain central in season 2.

Black or Green, choose sides

If Calm seems acquired for the Greens, the allegiance of two great Houses still remains unresolved: the Arryns and the Starks. If they were sworn to Rhaenyra at the time, Jacaerys went to check if they intended to honor their word. As the Queen reminds us, House Arryn is almost won over to his cause. Aemma, his mother, indeed bore the name of Arryn, being the daughter of Daella Targaryen and Rodrik Arryn. So Arryn blood flows through Rhaenyra’s veins. Also, House Arryn is headed by a woman at this time. She therefore has even more reasons to help the Queen, whether out of female solidarity or not to give her opponents one more reason to question her inheritance rights.

As for the Lords of the North, their attachment to oaths and their values suggests that they will keep their word. But we still haven’t seen Cregan Stark, current Lord of Winterfell, so it’s unclear if his sense of honor is as great as that of his descendant Ned Stark. Still, Game of Thrones fans risk find the snowy landscapes of Winterfell, and that is a real pleasure.

But even with these two potential Houses, the Blacks remain inferior to the Greens, at least as it stands. Because when power games are in motion, the camps are never well fixed, especially in the universe of George RR Martin. Will the two Cargyll brothers remain in separate camps? Will Rhaenys, so indecisive, stay on Rhaenyra’s side if the latter indulges in a quest for murderous revenge? Has Corlys really abandoned all his ambitions? Will the interests of Larys Fort always stick with those of Alicent or Otto Hightower? Many changes of sides are still possible and we suspect that this Dance of the Dragons will have, as for Game of Thrones, the right to its share of unexpected betrayals or even secrets to unearth.

If we look closely, there are still a number of outstanding items that have been slipped here and there throughout this season. The most recent is most certainly the introduction of a bastard of Aegon. In Fire and Blood, we learn that the young King has a number of them. Nothing surprising when you look at the series, in which Aegon has morals for the less light. Given how keen Alicent was to ensure that the raped servant girl did not become pregnant, you suspect that the presence of at least one bastard in the wild could change some claims to the throne. The Faith of the Seven might rebel, as she has done in the past, in the face of this King without virtue, or the little one could be used for political purposes, as was the case for Gendry in Game Of Thrones.

Another character in the shadows who could well play an important role: the White Worm. According to episode 9, she would have perished in the flames lit by the mercenaries of Larys. But is this really the case? We know it, a corpse that we don’t see in Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon is not yet a corpse. She could very well have faked her death in order to act even more in the shadows. Characters like this (a la Lord Varys or Littlefinger) make George RR Martin’s stories particularly unpredictable. For the good of the series and its possible twists, we can only hope that it will make a resounding return. In the book, she also takes part in the Dance of the Dragons, as the equivalent of Larys Fort but on the Black side.

And then there is Laenor Velaryon. The young man surprised everyone (and even the readers) by fleeing with his lover on a dilapidated boat. We are therefore not immune to seeing him return to lend a hand to the one who offered him the freedom he dreamed of. However, we hope not. By making this choice, the showrunners have indeed gone against the book, in which Laenor actually dies. As we explained to you in the article dedicated to episode 7, this reversal of the situation could remain consistent with Fire and Bloodthe book gathering only the limited and non-omniscient accounts of the maesters. But if the latter returns to take part in the battle, the gap between the book and the series may annoy more than one. To be continued…
