The prices of products in supermarkets have risen by 12.33% in one year, Test Achats indicated on Friday. This percentage also increased by 1% compared to the previous month. To make this calculation, Test-Achats was based on the prices in August of 3,000 products from the shelves of the supermarket chains Albert Heijn, Carrefour, Colruyt, Cora, Delhaize, Aldi and Lidl.
The products whose price has increased the most since August 2021 are spaghetti (+35%), toilet paper, paper towels and tissues (+33%), butter (+30%) and mustard (+36%). Note that the price of the latter increased by 10% per month in July and August.
According to Test Achats, this price increase is due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, these two countries being the main producers of mustard seeds for the European market.
Dairy products are not left out since they cost on average 17% more than a year ago. Groceries and personal care products were up 13% each, and deli meats and pet food were up 12%.
On a more positive note, Test Achats points out that the price of cereals fell by 11.5% in July thanks to the resumption of cereal shipments from Ukraine and good harvests in several countries. The price of vegetable oil also fell by 19.2% in international markets, according to the organization.
Globally, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said on Friday that food prices continued to fall for the fifth consecutive month. In August, the price of the basket of basic products fell by 1.9%.
