Festivals: the inequality of subsidies

“Le Soir” looked at the way in which the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB) subsidizes festivals. And there are big differences. The Francofolies de Spa, for example, receive ten times more than the Ronquières Festival, even though they only attract three times as many people.

During the whole weekend, no less than 40,000 festival-goers are expected at the Ronquières Festival to applaud Orelsan, Julien Doré, Louane or Eddy De Pretto. A festival which benefits from an annual aid of 30,000 euros from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. In Ronquières, this subsidy covers only a small percent of the total festival budget, according to Gino Innocente, the organizer. “Even if we would like a review of subsidies, we are not here to complain: some receive nothing, and then we operate very healthily on the basis of traditional income”.
