Da month to the day, that is to say on the night of September 23 to 24, the Doel 3 nuclear reactor will be disconnected from the electricity grid. The law on the exit from nuclear power provides that the cessation of activities must take place no later than October 1st. This will be the first Belgian reactor to be permanently decommissioned.

Since mid-July, Doel 3 has not been running at full capacity because the nuclear fuel is running out and offers less energy. The power of the reactor will only decrease until September 23. Until then, Doel 3 will only deliver around 60 percent of its full capacity.

In the first weeks following the decoupling of the reactor, the activities concerning it will be similar to those carried out during an ordinary outage for maintenance. Then the reactor will cool down and then, a few days later, the fuel will be removed from it. The fuel will then be left to cool for several years, in special locations located in the plant itself, explains Engie Electrabel.

Major dismantling work is not planned for several years. The closure of the Tihange 2 reactor is scheduled for February 1 next year.
