EUROPE/ITALY – 150 years of mission for the Comboni Sisters: an exhibition in view of the General Chapter

Verona (Agenzia Fides) – The 150th anniversary of the founding of the Comboni Missionary Sisters will be commemorated on September 14 at the Mother House in Verona with the inauguration of the exhibition “A continuing promise”, in view of a project wider promotion of the cultural heritage of the Congregation. Indeed, the relocation (from Rome to Verona) of the Historical Archive of the Congregation and the reorganization of the permanent exhibition of the objects of the Museum of the Comboni Missionary Sisters will soon be completed: thanks to a new layout, it will be placed in some of the spaces the most significant of the Mother House and, through the use of multimedia technologies, it will make it possible to tell the lived experience of the missionary experience and to show its continuous evolution.
“A choice that also responds to the changes of the times”, explains Sister Luigina Coccia, Superior General. Our Institute suffered a severe blow when, shortly after its foundation, Daniele Comboni died. But the foresight of the sisters who had shared the mission with him ensured that this precious treasure was not lost. Thus, despite the difficulties, and knowing how to respond to new needs from time to time, the Institute arrived a century and a half later”.
Today there are 1,017 Comboni Missionaries in the world belonging to 34 nations (608 Europeans, 248 Africans, 157 Americans, 4 Asians), the average age is 70 years, and this calls for a reflection that will be agenda of the XXI General Chapter which will be held at the Mother House from October 1st to 26th. “Since we, the sisters, are diminishing, we could be tempted to fall back on the countries where we are already present, comments Sister Luigina Coccia, but I think that we should rather reorganize ourselves so that the Institute continues to grow in as many countries as possible, perhaps with fewer presences and expanding collaboration with other congregations, because we believe that each human reality, each culture, each church has much to give us. enriches us, not only with new members, thus cultivating interculturality within it, but also with new ways of understanding who we are as Comboni missionaries today; therefore, the challenge and the dream at the same time It is that as Comboni Missionaries we can continue to be present on the four continents and, why not, also on the five”.
