At the same time, the government is working on a “change of tool”: it would operate in the future via excise duties, again in order to compress taxation on energy.

Lhe reduction in VAT from 21% to 6% on the price of gas and electricity is set to last. This is the line of principle within the federal government. Until when ? Until further notice, the idea is to maintain the VAT rate compression measure until the end of the first quarter of 2023. Will we go beyond that? We discuss it within the government, in budgetary conclave, as we know.

Federal Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) declared on Radio 1 on Monday that the measure would be “permanent”. More precisely, it is a question of “changing tools”, as we are told within Vivaldi. Namely: alongside VAT, act in the future via excise duties, which allows a certain reactivity, flexibility, both downwards and upwards (in particular by means of the “ratchet” system) in the policy of price. The project is on the government table. With the objective, in fact, of maintaining a crisis tax rate, therefore at its lowest.
