The night before she was partying. Annabelle then thought that her blurry vision or headaches were symptoms of a hangover. But when she woke up during the night, it was a shock: she collapsed and could not move, reports The Sun.

Within three days, the Briton, now 39, had lost her life and was paralyzed from the waist down. In reality, she suffered from neuromyelitis optica, a rare condition where the immune system damages the spinal cord and nerves to the eyes.

Annabelle recalls: “I was out with my friends on a Friday night in September 2007, having fun and enjoying life. I had a headache the next day, and it persisted until Sunday. My vision had also started to blur. Then the tingling in my legs started. I went to bed and woke up at night to go to the bathroom, but my legs gave out and I screamed for Danny to help me and we went to the hospital (…) I was paralyzed. I then lost my sight”.

In February 2008, the lady finally returned home, where she had to relearn everyday gestures from her wheelchair. But Annabelle did not want to give up: “I was determined to continue traveling and I refused to let my new condition stop me. It was different because all of a sudden I had to rely on other people for everything (…) I was determined and it’s just about learning to adapt to my changes and now we have traveled all over the world.
