Apple deploys iOS 16, here are the most practical new functions

iPhone users will be able to look forward to a major update to their phone’s operating system today. This Monday at 7 p.m. (Belgian), Apple will indeed deploy iOS 16. Data News reviews the main new features below.

To avoid disappointment, first know that you will need at least an iPhone 8 for iOS 16. All iPhones from this model dating from 2017 will accept the update, although for some functions, you will have when even need a newer model. There will even be functions that will only be compatible with the brand new iPhone 14. Let’s think here of the Cinematic video mode in 4K status, as well as the Action movie mode which (even more than before) reduces unwanted movements and shocks in the picture.

What is also striking is that the new iOS 16 version does not come out this time at the same time as the update for iPadOS. The latter is a bit postponed and will probably be introduced in October. During this month, Apple will, according to all expectations, organize a new launch event, where a number of iPads would be introduced.

Flexible access screen

The main feature of iOS 16 is the widely customizable access screen now. This is how you can, among other things, exercise greater control over the fonts and colors used, as well as the way notifications are displayed (stacked rather than in list form, for example). Then you will find more (more informative) widgets. You will be able to create multiple access screens and you will have to unlock your iPhone less often: data about live events, such as sports scores for example, will appear directly on the access screen in iOS 16 if necessary. And so will, if you will, the music player interface.

Better ‘do not disturb’

With Focus, it was already possible for quite a long time to deactivate unwanted notifications, to avoid being constantly disturbed or distracted. In iOS 16, on the other hand, you will be able to indicate with much more precision and speed from which apps and contact persons you wish to receive notifications. It will even be possible to associate a separate access screen to a certain Focus status, for example to keep settings related to your work and your hobbies separate. A simple swipe will suffice to exit Focus.

Solution of ‘oops messages’

We all send a message containing a spelling error or, even worse, having content that we regret immediately afterwards. With iOS 16, you can still adapt the messages you have just sent or even prevent them from being sent altogether. You can also mark as ‘unread’ messages from third parties, if you wish to react to them later. Another new feature of the Messages app in iOS 16 is that you’ll be able to collaborate with others, including sharing notes, presentations, or Tab Groups from your browser.

Fitness without a watch

The Apple Watch Fitness app will also be present on the iPhone thanks to iOS 16. This will also allow users without this smartwatch to track the number of steps they take or the calories they burn and this, via the sensors of the iPhone. Later this year Apple’s paid Fitness+ service will be released on the iPhone, but only, it is true, in the 21 countries where this service is present as of now (in Belgium, it is not yet the case).

But still…

Like every iOS update, the sixteenth version also includes dozens of smaller improvements intended to make life a bit easier for users. To name a few: the automatic sharing of photos with the people who are there, the more extensive search function in the Mail app, an easier login with so-called ‘passkeys’ (keys of ‘access), the Wallet app which now keeps an overview of everything you pay with Apple Pay and, last but not least, you will now be able to play with Nintendo’s Joy-Con controllers.
